       3 c  Light molasses
       3 lb Sugar
     1/2 c  Vinegar
       2 c  Water
     1/2 lb Butter
     3/4 ts Baking soda, sifted
       2 ts Vanilla
  
   Directions:
     Combine molasses, sugar, vinegar and weater in a large, heavy pan, boil
   to hard-bal stage. add butter, boil to hard ball stage or 260 F on a candy
   thermometer. remove from heat, add baking soda, samll amount at a time,
   stirring constantly. add vanilla, stir. Pour onto buttered marble top or
   large platter. cool until mixture can be handled. pull until golden. cut
   into bite-sized pieces. Wrap. Yields:5 lbs.
