                      Frozen Strawberry Meringue Torte

                         CRUST:
    1      cup           graham cracker crumbs
    3      tablespoons   sugar
      1/4  cup           butter -- melted
      1/2  cup           pecans -- chopped
                         FILLING:
    3      cups          whole fresh or frozen strawberries
    1      cup           sugar
    2                    egg whites
    1      tablespoon    lemon juice
    1      teaspoon      vanilla
      1/8  teaspoon      salt
      1/2  cup           whipping cream
 
 Combine cracker crumbs, sugar, butter and pecans.  Press into bottom of
 10-inch spring form pan.  Bake at 325 degrees for 10 minutes.  Cool.
 
 Slice strawberries to make 2 cups (save rest for garnish).  Combine sliced
 berries, sugar, egg whites, lemon juice, vanilla and salt in large bowl of
 electric mixer.  Beat on low speed to blend, then high speed until peaks form
 when beaters are removed---about 15 minutes.  In another bowl, beat cream
 until soft peaks form, then fold into berry meringue.  Pour into cooled crust.
 Cover and freeze until very firm---12 hours.  
 
 To serve, remove spring form.  Arrange about 7 halved berries around edge.
 Cut into wedges.  Serve immediately.  Pass bowl of sliced berries to spoon
 over servings.
