       3 c  water
       1 c  soy sauce
     1/4 c  rice wine
     1/4 c  garlic
       2    star anise
       3 t  sugar
       2 t  peanut oil
 
 heat oil in a skillet, over a high flame
 add garlic and saute until lightly colored 
 stir in remaining ingredients 
 reduce flame to medium 
 heat and stir for 15-20 minutes, until thickened 
 strain through a chinois
 use as desired
