                               Apple Dessert

    3      cups          self-rising flour
    2      cups          sugar
    1      cup           shortening
    1      teaspoon      finely shredded lemon peel
    4      medium        cooking apples -- peeled, cored &
                          -- sliced (3 c.)
    1      cup           warm milk
    2                    eggs
      1/4  cup           brandy or whiskey
    1      teaspoon      vanilla
                         Vanilla ice cream or whipped cream -- (opt.)
 
  Grease and flour a 13“x9”x2 baking pan; set aside.
 
  In a mixing bowl stir together the flour and sugar; cut in shortening until mi
 xture resembles coarse crumbs.  Stir in lemon peel.  Place half of the crumb mi
 xture in bottom of prepared baking pan.  Cover with half of the sliced apples. 
  Top with the remaining crumb mixture, then remaining apples.
 
  Beat together warm milk, eggs, brandy and vanilla.  Pour over apple mixture in
  baking pan.  Bake in 350 degree oven for about 1 hour or until golden and cake
  tests done.  Cool on wire rack 15 to 20 minutes before serving.  Cut into squa
 res and serve with scoops of ice cream of dollops of whipped cream, if desired.
   Makes 12 servings.
