Butter an lightly flour two 8" round cake pans or one 9"X13" pan. Mix the flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda and salt in a bowl. Add the buttermilk, vegetable oil and vanilla, beating until smooth. Spread in the pans or pan, and bake, about 20-25 minutes for the small pans, 35-45 minutes for the large one. Test to see if a toothpick comes out clean.
