                        Date And Chocolate Chip Cake

    1      cup           chopped unsweetened dates
    1 1/2  teaspoons     baking soda
    1 2/3  cups          boiling water
      1/2  cup           margarine
      1/2  cup           sugar
    2                    eggs
    1 3/4  cups          all-purpose flour
      1/2  teaspoon      baking soda
    1      teaspoon      baking powder
      1/2  teaspoon      salt
    3      tablespoons   mini semisweet chocolate chips
    3                    tablespooons finely chopped walnuts
 
 Combine dates and 1 1/2 teaspoons soda in small pan.  Pour boiling water over d
 ates; stir to blend.  Let stand 30 minutes.  Cream margarine and sugar.  Add eg
 gs and beat well.  Combine flour, soda, baking powder, and salt.  Alternately a
 dd dry ingredients and date mixture to creamed mixture beginning and ending wit
 h dry ingredients.  Batter will be thin.  Pour into oiled and floured 9 x 13-in
 ch baking pan.  Sprinkle chocolate chips and walnuts over batter.  Bake at 350 
 degrees for 25 to 30 minutes or until cake tests done.  Cool.  Cut into 28 piec
 es (4 across and 7 down).
